Joe Macenka spent more than 35 years at the highest levels of the communications industry, including more than 16 with The Associated Press. In 2009, his three-part series about the shooting death of a promising young Virginia Commonwealth University student got him nominated for a Pulitzer Prize in feature writing. His first book, Hope Emerges, details the work at a specialty unit of a U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs hospital in Richmond, Va., that handles the worst of the worst military injury cases returning from overseas. PBS began production in December 2016 on a documentary based on the critically acclaimed Hope Emerges.
